Contaminant transport and attenuation in fissured argillites — a case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Based on a comprehensive field study conducted at the Miinchehagen waste disposal site, the groundwater flow and solute transport characteristics of fissured argillites rocks are described. Particularly recent multi-tracer experiments and supplementary laboratory diffusion and batch sorption experiments are presented. The fissured rock behaves as an anisotropic homogeneous continuun with respect to permeability and storativity. Solute transport is strongly influenced by matrix diffusion and sorption. The preliminary results indicate that simple relationships between systems of parallel fractures and homogeneous aquifers can be used to roughly estimate solute transport characteristics of the fissured rocks.

Risk assessment of industrial hydrocarbon release and transport in the vadose zone as it travels to groundwater table: A case study
In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...

متن کاملDiffusion as the main process for mass transport in very low water content argillites: 1. Chloride as a natural tracer for mass transportDiffusion coefficient and concentration measurements in interstitial water
[1] Argillites are one of the rock types studied by French authorities for their confining properties for the isolation of radioactive wastes. One of the main objectives of such study is the better understanding of water transport through rocks with very low water content and hydraulic conductivity, using modeling of tracer profiles. This article presents the protocol developed and applied for ...
متن کاملExperimental and Mathematical Investigation of Time-Dependence of Contaminant Dispersivity in Soil
Laboratory and field experiments have shown that dispersivity is one of the key parameters in contaminant transport in porous media and varies with elapsed time. This time-dependence can be shown using a time-variable dispersivity function. The advantage of this function as opposed to constant dispersivity is that it has at least two coefficients that increase the accuracy of the dispersivity p...
متن کاملEvaluation of Optimum Landfill Design by Contaminant Transport Analysis
Contaminant transport analysis was performed for four selected solid waste landfill designs using the computer code POLLUTE. The diffusion coefficients were determined for the natural soils (aquitard) and compacted soils from the Urumia landfill site, using the diffusion tests. These coefficients along with the geometrical, physical, and chemical parameters of the natural soil and engineered la...
